What is my arcana?

Your arcana is the single Major Arcana card you reach by adding up every digit of your birth date. Write the date as year, month and day, add the eight digits, and if the total is above 22, add its digits again: 15 March 1990 gives 1+9+9+0+0+3+1+5 = 28, then 2+8 = 10, Wheel of Fortune. A total of 22 is The Fool — card 0 in the deck, which arcana calculators place at 22. Your birth card pair comes from a different sum, adding the month, the day and the year as two-digit numbers, with the year split in two (19 and 90), so your arcana can match one of your two birth cards or sit outside the pair.

What Are Tarot Birth Cards?

Tarot birth cards are Major Arcana archetypes derived from your birthdate using a numerological calculation. Unlike a daily card draw or a spread reading, your birth cards don't change — they describe lifelong themes, core strengths, and recurring patterns that shape who you are.

Most people have two birth cards that exist in a dynamic relationship with each other. A rare few — those whose birthdate reduces to 19 — have three birth cards, creating a more complex three-way dynamic.

This calculator uses the most widely recognized numerological method for calculating tarot birth cards. It sums the four two-digit components of your birthdate (month, day, and the two parts of your birth year), then reduces the result to a number between 1 and 21 using a specific reduction rule. Your arcana is one Major Arcana card found from your full date of birth. Write the date as year, month and day, add all eight digits, and if the total is above 22, add its digits again. Why is my arcana different from my birth cards?

They come from two different sums. Your arcana adds every single digit of your birth date and reduces the total again only when it is above 22. Your birth cards add the month, day and year as two-digit numbers and reduce above 21, which gives a pair of cards rather than one. Because the sums differ, your arcana can be one of your two birth cards or a card outside the pair. Neither result replaces the other — they are two ways of reading the same date, and the section 'What is my arcana?' above walks through the difference.

What is a personal arcana?

The phrase has two meanings. Most arcana calculators use 'personal arcana' for the single card you get by adding up your whole birth date — the arcana this calculator shows. In the Matrix of Destiny, a numerology system built on the 22 Major Arcana, it means the card for the day of the month you were born, reduced to 1–22, which is one position in a larger chart. If you have seen a different number for your personal arcana elsewhere, it is most likely that day-of-birth position, not a different sum of your full date.

What are personality and soul cards?

Personality card and soul card are Mary K. Greer's names for the two roles inside a birth card pairing. The number your birth date first reduces to names your personality card, and its single-digit reduction names your soul card. When that first number is already a single digit, one card holds both roles and the higher-numbered card in the pairing is what Greer calls the hidden factor, or teacher. The roles follow your own total rather than the pairing itself, so two people can share the same two cards with the roles falling differently. This calculator shows the pair without labels.

Why does another birth card calculator give me different cards?

Not every calculator adds up a birthday the same way. This calculator uses the four-number method that the most widely used birth-card calculators use: your birth month, day and the two halves of your birth year, each added as a two-digit number. Mary K. Greer's original whole-number method adds the month, day and year as whole numbers instead, and for about a quarter of birth dates it gives a neighboring pairing. The two pairings always share a card, and neither result replaces the other.
