The Onyi Tarot Deck

The Onyi Tarot Deck is a 78-card set that blends vibrant watercolor artwork with traditional tarot structure, created by artist Sophie Julich. Inspired by nature, winged creatures, and the feminine form, the deck aims to bring whimsy and healing into readers' lives. Each card is a unique piece of art, reflecting Julich's background in painting and her desire to merge artistic expression with written narrative.

This limited edition deck was exclusive to its 2021 Kickstarter campaign, with each box signed and numbered by the artist. A digital guidebook, co-written by Julich and her best friend Onyi, provides card meanings and insights into the concept art and inspiration behind each illustration. The deck's creation was a personal journey for Julich, who pursued her dream of selling art during the pandemic, focusing on themes of healing and connection.

The Onyi Tarot offers a unique visual experience, moving away from traditional tarot aesthetics with its expressive, fluid style. It aims to be both enchanting and unique, providing a tool for self-reflection and personal growth. The collector's edition, a second printing of only 20 decks, featured holographic gilded edges and additional items like a quartz crystal and velvet bag, emphasizing its artistic and collectible nature.

The artwork is characterized by a vibrant, expressive watercolor style, with fluid lines and a rich, saturated color palette. The imagery frequently features the feminine form, often interacting with elements of nature like birds, fish, and butterflies, rendered in a whimsical and sometimes surreal manner. The colors are bold and varied, with deep blues, purples, greens, and bright pinks dominating the compositions, creating a dreamy and ethereal mood. The campaign image confirms this painterly approach, showcasing cards with distinct hand-drawn qualities and a strong emphasis on color and organic shapes, rather than precise, rigid lines.

This deck is ideal for tarot readers who appreciate expressive, hand-painted art and a vibrant, whimsical aesthetic. It will appeal to those interested in decks that emphasize nature, the feminine, and themes of healing and personal growth. Collectors looking for unique, limited-edition decks with a strong artistic voice will also find it appealing. While following a 78-card structure, the artistic interpretation makes it suitable for intuitive readers more than those strictly adhering to RWS iconography.
