The Materia Medica Oracle Deck

The Materia Medica Oracle Deck is a pocket-sized tool for divination and plant identification, created by midwestern illustrator kendall quack. This deck focuses on the magic and medicine of plants, presenting detailed botanical illustrations alongside each plant's common name and a concise keyword or phrase to guide interpretation. The concept draws from the historical practice of materia medica, which is a body of collected knowledge about the therapeutic properties of medicinal substances, primarily plants.

Designed to be both aesthetically pleasing and functionally insightful, the deck offers a gentle approach to self-reflection and connection with the natural world. The compact size makes it convenient for on-the-go readings, allowing users to carry the wisdom of plants with them. The accompanying Materia Medica Guidebook provides further context and meanings for each card, enhancing the reading experience for both novice and experienced oracle users.

The deck successfully funded on Kickstarter in 2020, raising over $14,000 from 312 backers. Its appeal lies in its clear theme, accessible format, and the creator's passion for natural history and mysticism. The inclusion of a special card with backers' names also fostered a strong community connection during its development.

The artwork features detailed botanical illustrations, rendered in a style that combines scientific accuracy with a delicate, hand-drawn aesthetic. Each plant is depicted with fine linework and subtle watercolor-like shading, creating a naturalistic yet artistic representation. The color palette is earthy and muted, dominated by greens, browns, and soft floral tones, which enhances the deck's connection to nature. The illustrations are framed by a simple, clean border, with the plant's name prominently displayed at the top and a keyword at the bottom, ensuring clarity and ease of use. The overall visual impression is one of elegance and clarity, reminiscent of vintage botanical prints.

This deck is ideal for plant enthusiasts, herbalists, and anyone interested in connecting with the natural world for guidance and self-reflection. It appeals to oracle readers who prefer a clear, direct system with a strong thematic focus. Its pocket size makes it suitable for those who want a portable divination tool. Readers new to oracle decks will appreciate the straightforward keywords and accompanying guidebook.
