The Child Inside Tarot

The Child Inside Tarot is a unique photographic deck created by artist Alice Smeets, designed to foster playfulness and reconnect adults with their inner child. Each card features children in symbolic poses and settings, capturing moments of wonder, imagination, and innocence. The deck aims to make tarot accessible and engaging for both experienced readers and those new to divination, including younger audiences.

The deck's core concept revolves around the idea of rediscovering the joy and curiosity often lost in adulthood. By presenting traditional tarot archetypes through the lens of childhood experiences, Smeets invites users to approach readings with an open heart and a sense of adventure. The vibrant, often whimsical, imagery encourages intuitive interpretation and personal reflection on themes of growth, creativity, and emotional well-being.

Launched successfully on Kickstarter in 2023, the deck garnered support from 178 backers, raising $16,486. This indicates a strong interest in decks that offer a fresh, accessible perspective on tarot, particularly those with a focus on self-discovery and emotional healing through a lighthearted approach. The photographic medium provides a distinct visual experience compared to illustrated decks.

The artwork consists of vibrant, high-quality photographs, primarily featuring children in various symbolic and imaginative scenarios. The color palette is bright and saturated, utilizing natural light and vivid backdrops to create a sense of magic and playfulness. Many images incorporate elements of fantasy or surrealism, such as a child floating in a bubble or riding a unicorn, suggesting a blend of reality and imagination. The compositions are dynamic and expressive, with the children's emotions and actions clearly conveying the card's intended meaning. The overall aesthetic is whimsical and heartwarming, designed to evoke a sense of nostalgia and childlike wonder.

This deck is ideal for tarot readers seeking a lighthearted, intuitive, and visually distinct experience. It appeals to those interested in inner child work, emotional healing, and fostering creativity. Its accessible imagery also makes it suitable for beginners, parents, or educators looking for a deck that can engage younger audiences in a gentle way. Collectors of unique photographic decks or those who appreciate whimsical and uplifting art will also find this deck appealing.
