Our Tarot

Our Tarot is an innovative 78-card deck that merges traditional tarot archetypes with the stories of influential women throughout history. Created by artist Sarah Shipman, the deck aims to provide insight and inspiration by connecting each card's meaning to a specific woman's accomplishments, personality, and biography. The project was successfully funded on Kickstarter in 2016, raising over $35,000 from 653 backers.

Each card in Our Tarot is uniquely designed, featuring the likeness and name of a remarkable woman. The selection of women is intentionally diverse, spanning various ethnicities, creeds, socioeconomic classes, sexualities, cisgender and transgender identities, ages, and abilities, from 1300 BCE to the present day. This approach transforms the deck into a tool for education and inspiration, encouraging users to learn about these figures while engaging with tarot.

The deck includes an extensive guidebook, estimated at 90-100 pages, which provides information about each featured woman and the traditional meanings behind her corresponding card. This dual function allows the deck to serve both as a divination tool and a historical resource, appealing to a broad audience interested in feminism, history, and personal empowerment.

Sarah Shipman, the creator of Our Tarot, holds a Bachelor of Fine Art in Studio Art and a Master of Fine Art in Painting. Her passion lies in helping people through art and, as a future mental health counselor, in fostering self-knowledge and meaningful lives. Shipman's love for history and tarot, combined with her ardent feminist values, drove the creation of this deck. She aimed to empower and promote the rights of women and other oppressed groups by highlighting the stories of diverse, history-making women within the tarot framework, making her personal mission transparent in the project's design.
