Earthbound Oracle Deck

The Earthbound Oracle is a 54-card oracle deck created by artist Andy Swartz, known for his dream-like, macabre fantasy wildlife art. Conceived as a spiritual sequel to his previous work, The Wooden Tarot, this deck aims for a more practical and accessible reading experience. It focuses on simple, pithy subjects and symbols that are easy to understand yet flexible enough for multiple interpretations, making it suitable for direct answers without extensive research.

Originally planned as a 36-card deck, the project expanded to 54 cards during its successful Kickstarter campaign. The artwork for the cards was created on 6x8 inch birch wood panels using a mixed media approach of graphite, colored pencil, and acrylic paint. The deck is designed to be an open edition, with the first 500 decks produced through the Kickstarter funding. Each deck is printed at a standard playing card size of 2.5 x 3.5 inches (63x88mm) and comes in a custom tuck box.

Swartz emphasizes that an oracle deck, unlike tarot, has no fixed suits or names, offering a more intuitive and free-form interpretation. The Earthbound Oracle incorporates familiar imagery and symbolism from his previous work, drawing inspiration from old-world mythology and the natural world, but with a refined focus on clarity and ease of use for the reader.

The artwork is characterized by a dream-like, faintly creepy, and macabre fantasy wildlife style, consistent with artist Andy Swartz's previous work. The illustrations are created using mixed media, specifically graphite, colored pencil, and acrylic paint on birch wood panels. This combination suggests a textured, layered aesthetic, blending the precision of pencil work with the depth and vibrancy of acrylics. The campaign images, though limited, show a muted color palette with detailed animal and nature-inspired motifs, often depicting creatures in symbolic or slightly unsettling contexts. The style draws inspiration from cartoons, video games, scientific illustration, and folklore, resulting in a unique blend of the whimsical and the profound.

This deck is ideal for oracle readers who appreciate a direct, intuitive approach to divination and prefer not to engage in extensive research for card meanings. It will appeal to those drawn to a darker, whimsical, or macabre aesthetic, particularly fans of fantasy wildlife art and folklore. Readers familiar with Andy Swartz's previous work, like The Wooden Tarot, will find a natural progression in themes and style. It is suitable for both beginners seeking an easy-to-interpret deck and experienced readers looking for a unique, visually rich oracle.
