CARTOMANCER POKER DECK - Archetypal Playing Cards

The Cartomancer Poker Deck, created by Alain Benoit, is a 52-card playing card deck specifically designed with divination in mind. Drawing inspiration from French cartomancy, each card is uniquely illustrated with archetypal figures and symbols, moving beyond the standard pips and court card designs. The deck successfully funded on Kickstarter in 2017, raising $18,937 from 610 backers, indicating a strong interest in its dual functionality as both a game and a divination tool.

While maintaining the structure of a standard poker deck — 52 cards across four suits — the artwork transforms each card into a miniature narrative. This approach allows the deck to be used for traditional card games while simultaneously offering a rich visual language for intuitive readings. The campaign emphasizes its "archetypal" nature, suggesting that the imagery taps into universal human experiences and concepts, making it accessible for personal reflection and insight.

The deck's design bridges the gap between a collectible art object and a functional tool for both entertainment and spiritual practice. Its unique illustrations and stated purpose for divination set it apart from conventional playing card decks, appealing to those interested in cartomancy, visual storytelling, and unique card art.

The artwork employs a mixed-media, collage-like aesthetic, combining detailed line drawings with textured backgrounds and subtle color washes. The style appears to be hand-drawn, possibly with ink and watercolor, then digitally assembled. Each card features a distinct illustration, often depicting human figures or symbolic objects that evoke specific archetypes. For example, the King of Clubs shows a figure with traditional facial tattoos, while the 7 of Hearts features a distressed figure with hands over their ears, surrounded by heart motifs. The color palette is generally muted, with pops of red, blue, and purple, giving the deck a vintage or antique feel, consistent with its French cartomancy inspiration.

This deck is ideal for individuals interested in cartomancy and divination using playing cards, particularly those familiar with or curious about French cartomancy traditions. It also appeals to collectors of unique playing card decks and art enthusiasts who appreciate intricate, archetypal illustrations. Readers who enjoy intuitive interpretation based on visual cues, rather than strict symbolic systems, will find this deck engaging. It is suitable for both casual game players looking for an aesthetically rich deck and those seeking a deeper, divinatory experience.
